Comparing Window and Door Quotes: A Homeowner’s Checklist
Two quotations can describe the same number of windows and doors yet include very different products and levels of service. Comparing the total price is much easier once you understand what each quotation covers.
If you are planning improvements to your Scottish home, use this checklist to ask clear questions before deciding. At Precision Windows & Doors Ltd, we manufacture and install made-to-measure windows and doors, and we welcome a detailed conversation about your project.
Start with the same brief
Give each supplier the same list of openings and priorities. Note which rooms are involved, the styles you like and any problems you want to address, such as awkward access or difficult-to-use handles.
Photographs and approximate dimensions can help with an initial discussion. Make clear that these are for guidance: final sizes and suitability should be checked during a survey. If one quotation assumes a straightforward replacement and another includes changes to the opening, they are covering different work.
1. Are the products and layouts clearly described?
Check the material, product range and configuration for every opening. “New white windows” leaves much more open to interpretation than a room-by-room specification showing frame style, opening sections, glazing and hardware.
For doors, confirm which panels move, the opening direction and the usable access width. For windows, check handle positions and how each opening section will work alongside furniture or blinds. Browse our windows and doors to help explain the layouts you have in mind.
2. Does the performance information describe the complete product?
Ask what glazing, seals and locking systems are included in the quoted specification. If thermal-performance figures are supplied, clarify whether they refer to the glass alone or to the complete window or door.
Comparing like-for-like figures helps you make sense of the options. A general description such as “energy efficient” is useful as a starting point, but it should not replace details about the product you are ordering. Our guide to choosing energy-efficient windows explains more of the questions to ask.
3. Are colours and finishing details included?
Confirm the internal and external colours, surface finish, handle colour, glazing pattern and any decorative bars. Ask whether the quoted price includes the precise finish you have selected or a standard alternative.
Small details matter when several products sit together. If you are mixing materials or replacing only part of the house, ask to compare samples before agreeing the final specification.
4. What does installation include?
Clarify whether the quotation is for supply only or supply and installation. For installation work, ask about removal of the existing units, waste disposal, protection of the work area and the finish around the new frames.
Discuss internal sills, trims, plasterwork and any decoration separately so that responsibilities are clear. If scaffolding, difficult access or alterations to an opening may be involved, ask how those items are accounted for. Our installation guide can help you prepare for this conversation.
5. Are the price and timescales clear?
Ask for a clear total, including VAT where applicable, and a list of any exclusions or optional extras. Check how long the quotation remains valid and when any payments would be due.
Also ask whether the proposed manufacture and installation dates are estimates or confirmed arrangements. A particular finish, a revised specification or additional work may affect the timetable. Understanding this early helps you coordinate other improvements.
6. What happens after installation?
Ask for the written guarantee terms and an explanation of how to report an issue. Clarify which parts of the product and installation are covered, the relevant periods and any care requirements.
A headline guarantee length is only part of the picture. Keep the quotation, agreed specification, care information and guarantee documents together. You can review our guarantee information and ask our team how it applies to your chosen products.
Keep a simple comparison sheet
- List each opening and the proposed product beside it.
- Record glazing, hardware, colours and opening arrangements.
- Separate the product price from optional work or extras.
- Note installation inclusions, exclusions and estimated dates.
- Write down the guarantee and aftercare arrangements.
- Resolve any unanswered questions before agreeing the order.
